Like many parents of young children, Steve and I rarely get to the theater to see a movie. We used to go with some regularity pre-Sabrina. I am obsessed with movie theater popcorn and will sit through just about any movie provided I don’t have to share said popcorn. When we arrived in Nashville, we noticed that the McD’s right down the road has a redbox movie rental – $1 a night. Can’t beat it! (Although sadly it doesn’t dispense movie popcorn, which can’t be replicated at home because I’m sure the chemicals in the butter substance are too dangerous for home use. Just as well for my arteries.) We are notoriously bad at returning movies on time and the late fees we’ve paid could put Sabrina in private school so the $1 a night was perfect.

Because I am often the one out running errands, I usually pick up a movie for us to watch. I try to pick movies that I think we will both enjoy. Unfortunately, I’ve hit a really bad streak. I rented 4 in a row that were stinkers. Steve declared he got to pick the next 6 movies to make up for it but he never makes it to the box to rent them. Then his mom got us a Netflix subscription for Christmas (LOVE it!). I asked Steve what movies he wanted to see and he mumbled that he would have to look. But he never did so they started sending my picks. Again, not doing so well. Steve is threatening to change the Netflix password on me if my choices don’t improve. The only one that has been okay so far was Waitress – and we didn’t love it, it just wasn’t as bad as the others lately. The last one, Fracture, was so dull that Steve fell asleep about 1/2 way through.

Oh wise internet, tell me what movies you’ve loved in the past year or so. We watch most genres – romantic comedy, drama, thriller, action, even a little horror. We don’t tend to be big fans of indie films (NO Trainspotting, Amy!). Or, maybe more importantly, what movies were really bad so that I can avoid them.

I just watched Waitress last night, and if you’re picks were worse then that, WOW! I love Keri Russell, but the movie just kinda seemed to drag on.

The night before we watched ‘Good Luck, Chuck’ – that was okay, better then the Waitress.

A few months ago I watched an Adam Sandler movie, where he pretended to be gay, I didn’t even make it all the way through that one, and I love Adam Sandler!

Gosh – I used to love movies (when we had netflix).. and now I can’t even think of any! Good luck!

We just saw The Last King of Scotland and enjoyed it. It’s not a light hearted movie though and not for Sabrina.

I love my NetFlix!! My favorite is the exercise DVDs. I can rent them, try them, and copy them!! (don’t tell)

We watched Heartbreak Kid and thought that was good for a laugh or two. We also liked the Martian Child. Although you may want to take into consideration when figuring out if our opinion is worth anything, we loved Superbad and Napoleon Dynamite.

I haven’t seen a new movie in so long I couldn’t even begin to tell you. But hubby watches movies all the time so I’ll ask him and get back to you. One of the last movies that I remember him liking was 300…is that within the last year?

I saw someone mention Good Luck Chuck. Joe thought it was funny, I thougth it was obnoxious. I did like the I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry. I thought it was funny. HMMMMMM have you seen High Shcool Musical yet? Or, Ratatouille? Get my drift. I don’t get to watch many grown up movies.

I too am a movie theater popcorn addict!!! YUM!!!!!

I just looked through my list of movies from netflix. We liked Shooter, Breach, and Firewall-all sort of the same action/adventure genre. We just saw Apocalypto-it was pretty good, but Mel likes violence for violence sake, and that doesn’t sit well with me. Plus there was a scene when the children of the village were left behind and both T. and I lost it-it was too easy to imagine our little one. I also liked The Prestige, but I like pretty much anything with Christian Bale (even the American Psycho, or whatever that movie was). We’re waiting to watch 300-trying to find time when both T. and I are home and awake enough for a two hour movie is tough…

Munich and Syriana both made me sleepy, so I don’t really recommend those. You have to be in a “mood” to watch them, I guess, and I wasn’t there.

just saw “Derailed” on the “On Demand” section from our cable provider. it was free, so i think it is on dvd. it kept me guessing, and is a thriller. definitely not oscar material, but worth a buck…

another movie i like is “Run Lola Run”. it is a german movie, so has subtitles. also, two other german movies that are available in the u.s. and i liked are “Goodbye Lenin” (one of my faves) and “The Lives of Others”.

i mention these three because you probably wouldn’t know of them as they didn’t receive a lot of recognition with mainstream u.s. audiences, but are all three very good. plus, i like foreign films because everyone doesn’t look perfect and that seems more realistic to me. and, i am always trying to perfect my german ;). ch

Heartbreak kid was just too funny. It dragged on near the end, but it had pretty funny scenes. I laughed so much.

I read your comment over and Pocklock and came to check out your blog. I totally wish people had given you a long list of watchable movies so that I could add them to my list to watch until new TV comes on.

I can add that the Catherine Zeta thing No Reservations was only good because I find Aaron Eckhart hot as all get out and a man cooking is like the hottest thing ever to me right now. I agree that Waitress was weak.

I polled colleagues today while I “worked” and these were suggested – I have not seen any of them so I can’t attest to them at all:
Little Miss Sunshine (I may be the only one who hasn’t seen this still)
in the company of men (because of my love for Aaron Eckhart)

I recommend “3:10 to Yuma” if you enjoy westerns. The acting by Russell Crowe and Christian Bale was very good.

I do not recommend “The Fountain”. My dh and I saw it at the theater, it was so bad we changed movies after approx 15 minutes to half an hour in.
